SPRING IP MEETING FOCUSES ON EDUCATION AND PRIVACY TOPICS

4/16/2015

Guest speakers at the Greater Philadelphia Healthcare Partnership’s April IP meeting discussed important education and privacy topics, covering important workforce topics from a wide range of different perspectives. “Convening representatives from all these different groups is one of the Partnership’s most essential functions,” IP Director Susan B. Thomas explained. “The IP is a forum where representatives from healthcare organizations can hear from bright young public servants, community service organizations, and experienced healthcare lawyers — and really consider what these developments mean for them and their organizations.”

As usual, the meeting opened with IP Director Thomas’s review of quarterly and year-to-date achievements in training, fundraising and other Partnership activities. With one quarter to go before the conclusion of the 2014-15 IP cycle, the Partnership has completed 331 trainings and is on pace to match or surpass last year’s total; scheduled up-coming trainings include Teambuilding and Trust, HIPAA, Workforce Readiness, and Customer Service and Communications trainings for community health employers. Also announced were a number of pending grant applications: one to support the District 1199C Training & Upgrading Fund’s Practical Nursing Program, one to participate in establishing a National Center for Healthcare Apprenticeship, and one — just one of three applications endorsed by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter for the Wells Fargo & US Conference of Mayors “CommunityWINS” funding program — to support the creation of Community Health and Behavioral Health pre-apprenticeship programs for out-of-school, out-of-work young people.

Following the quarterly IP update, assembled Greater Philadelphia Healthcare Partnership members had the opportunity to hear from, and question, Philadelphia Democratic City Council At-Large candidate Isaiah Thomas. Thomas stressed the importance of education to addressing Philadelphia’s future workforce needs. He explained his conviction that our schools must prepare students for college, and to compete in the 21st century economy. Thomas discussed his proposals to revamp school curricula to emphasize the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields and make sure that students are trained in using the latest technology tools, including 3D printers and other manufacturing processes. Thomas was followed by the Philadelphia Youth Network’s Kelsey DeMerlis, who introduced PYN’s summer internship program for youth. Finally, featured speaker Dmitri Tuchinsky, Esq. of law firm Duane Morris, provided an introduction to new privacy and confidentiality developments affecting the healthcare workforce. HIPAA — the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act — is an increasingly-significant force in the healthcare workplace, reshaping the way healthcare professionals relate to each other, to their employers, to patients, and to sub-contractors and other personnel. HIPAA training is available through the Greater Philadelphia Healthcare Partnership’s menu of discounted training options; contact us today to ensure that your workforce understands and can apply this important law.

The Partnership will meet next at 8:30 AM on July 23rd, 2014, at the District 1199C Training & Upgrading Fund’s Breslin Learning Center (10th floor of the Land Title Building, at 100 South Broad Street). Next quarter’s IP meeting will include a full review of the 2014-2015 IP cycle, including the release of our annual Year In Review, and an outline of planned 2015-2016 activities by IP Director Thomas; and featured speaker Jehtro Heiko will cover Dignity at End of Life.

If you or your organization are interested, the Greater Philadelphia Healthcare Partnership welcomes healthcare employers, academics, public sector and community partners, and workforce development professionals to its quarterly meetings and other special events.
