April 6, 2017, Phila PA: Temple University Health System (TUHS) welcomed staff and guests to graduation ceremony for another cohort of new Nurse Residents, marking completion of their first year of work at TUHS. Lois Scipione, Nurse Residency Specialist, welcomed everyone; and Michael Franklin, a member of the graduation class, provided insight into what his cohort experienced in their first year on the job, and how excited they are to move forward in their careers. |
Betty Craig, VP and Chief Nursing Officer at TUHS, delivered a keynote speech, sending a message about the importance of evidence-based practice in Nursing, and how the profession has come a long way in recent years in terms of this approach. She commended the graduates for their research projects, which covered timely topics in acute care and demonstrated evidence-based research. Projects presented by the graduates included: Reducing Blood Stream Infections in Intensive Care; Bedside Reporting and Its Impact on Patient Satisfaction; Insulin Delivery and Point of Care Testing; Fall Prevention - Identifying the Best Fall Scale Model; and Can COPD Care Bundles Reduce Hospital Readmission Rates? Below, some of the proud and successful graduates are pictured with their poster presentations:
Of fourteen graduates, eleven were eligible to participate in the Delaware Valley Healthcare Training and Employment Project (DVHTE), a multi-million dollar federal grant project sponsored by the District 1199C Training & Upgrading Fund and its Greater Philadelphia Healthcare Partnership. The Temple Nurse Residency program is a year-long program providing classroom seminars and on-the-job instruction while participants work as first year RNs. The DVHTE program is a perfect partnership, as its mission is to incentivize healthcare employers' hiring of individuals who are "new" to the industry by providing six months of On-the-Job Training (OJT) and wage reimbursement. The wage reimbursements to Temple provide valuable resources for the Nurse Residency program, and the grant provides perks to the participants including an advanced education stipend for programs not paid by Temple. In addition, the grant has provided Temple with national recognition by the US Department of Labor. We are most pleased to have Temple Health as our partner on this project as well as others.
